What we do and how we work.
Every engagement starts with a real problem. We dig into how your team operates, identify where things are breaking down, and build or connect the right solution. Here's what that looks like in practice.
What We Build
Three ways we engage.
Most projects touch more than one of these. The right combination depends on where you're losing time and what your team actually needs.
Build
Custom web applications and mobile-first field tools designed around how your crews actually work. Not generic SaaS you've been asked to adapt to. Not a form bolted onto someone else's platform. Built from scratch for the specific people doing the specific job.
The work starts with field reality (what a technician sees, what they need to capture, what the back office is waiting on) and works backward to the right tool. Simple enough to use on a phone at a job site. Reliable enough to run the business on.
Connect
Workflow automation that closes the gap between field data and back-office systems. If your team is re-entering information, chasing down completions, or manually moving data from one place to another, that's the problem we're solving.
The goal is a clean handoff: job completes in the field, the right data lands in the right place automatically. Billing, as-built records, job folders, payroll, without anyone having to assemble it.
Document
Technical documentation, as-built packages, and reporting systems that satisfy clients, meet compliance requirements, and give your team a clear record of every job, without documentation eating your project margin.
This ranges from building automated systems that generate as-builts on job completion, to creating the standards and templates your crews follow in the field. The common thread: documentation that's accurate, consistent, and doesn't require a dedicated person to produce.
How We Price
Three models. No surprises.
The right pricing structure depends on what you need. Here's how each one works.
Fixed-price custom work
We scope the work together, agree on exactly what gets built and what "done" looks like, and you receive a fixed price before anything starts. No hourly billing. No scope creep surprises. If the requirements don't change, the price doesn't change.
Applies to: Build, Connect, Document engagements
Buy it once, own it
Purpose-built tools and reference materials you purchase at a one-time price. No subscription, no ongoing fee. Fiber identification charts are here now, with more products in development.
Applies to: Fiber Charts, future standalone tools
Platform access + support
For solutions where we build and operate the platform, you pay a monthly fee for access and ongoing support. We maintain the system; you focus on using it. Clearwire runs on this model.
Applies to: Clearwire and hosted platform solutions
How It Works
From first call to finished work.
Every custom engagement follows the same four steps. No retainers before there's a scope. No builds before there's a price.
Discovery
We start with a call focused entirely on your operation. What's breaking down, where data is getting lost, what the field crew's day actually looks like. No demos. No pitches. Just understanding the problem.
Scope
02Based on the discovery conversation, we map out exactly what gets built, what it connects to, and what a successful outcome looks like. This becomes the basis for the proposal. Nothing starts without a clear scope.
Proposal
You receive a written proposal: deliverables, timeline, and a fixed price. If the scope fits your budget and timeline, we move forward. If not, we adjust. Nothing moves to build until you've approved a number in writing.
Build
We build iteratively with regular checkpoints. You see progress throughout, not just at the end. Handoff includes documentation, any necessary training, and a support window to make sure the system holds up under real conditions.
Ready to Start
Start with a discovery call.
No commitment required. If the problem is real and the fit makes sense, we'll tell you. If it's not the right engagement for us, we'll tell you that too.
info@johnstonetechs.comGood fit
OSP contractors, broadband providers, and self-perform teams dealing with broken field-to-office workflows, documentation gaps, or processes held together with spreadsheets and group texts.
Not a fit
Teams looking for off-the-shelf software recommendations, general IT support, or enterprise software that already exists and just needs configuration.
